I like this...

In fact...I love how this whole dark, industrial look is softened by the reclaimed wood separation. I was planning to paint our bathroom in grey (soft grey says Steve...) to take it out of its 80s time zone and I think it's a good example for a revamp.
Sur ce mes petits, I wish you a lovely evening!

Decorating With Mirrors

Coastal Living Designer Jill Johnson; Photographer Grey Crawford

Mirrors can be a great way to expand a space, add interest, make a statement, reflect light or a great view and generally add sparkle. Here are some ideas for incorporating mirrors into your space...

Designer Jeffrey Billhuber layered an antique mirror over the window for use with this floating dressing table.

Framed mirrors also make a dramatic statement in this bedroom...

Designer Vincent Wolf likes using massive, over-scaled mirrors leaning against walls, as you can see in the bedrooms he designed above and below. This is some of what he told House Beautiful about that. "It's taking an architectural approach to a decorative object — like cutting open a wall onto a space beyond. It's also more casual and interesting to lean something than to hang it. Once a mirror is hung, it's isolated on the wall. But when it leans, the floor runs right into the glass."

I love the idea of layering mirrors like designer Mary McGee did in her living room. You could also just layer a great frame over a mirror and it would work just as well.

The mirror used in this bedroom designed by Gary McBourne (House Beautiful - Photo: James Merrell) was too small so they added what Gary calls a "sash" to give it scale. I'll admit that, even though this room is beautifully designed, it isn't my style but that doesn't matter. The basic idea can be used in any room from casual to formal and contemporary to traditional and there are a variety of items (fabric, ribbon, rope, etc.) you could use to make your "sash". Just hang the mirror on the wall and then attach the "sash" to the back of the mirror and the hook.

This is much more subtle but these vanity doors and drawers are also mirrored.

Mirrored night stands are so pretty, aren't they?

Displaying a variety of mirrors on ledges is a creative and fun idea to punch up your space.

Adding mirrors to an armoire in a bedroom is a great idea, especially if you're short on space to add one anywhere else.

Reflective drum shades could be stunning in the right space!

Using a mercury glass mat for a centerpiece. I've used a framed mirror in the same way in the past, which also works well.

Just for fun... Can you tell what this frame is made from? I'm sure you probably can. Colored plastic spoons! :-) Country Living

Cute tennis racket mirrors from Country Living. Imagine how many different things you could repurpose as mirrors once you start thinking outside the box...

Hmmm... Any ideas on how I can get my mirror to reflect the same view that this mirror is reflecting? :-)

Bathrooms

As you live in your house throughout the years, do updates periodically. If and when you decide to sell your house at least you won't be trying to complete last minute renovations. So, do the upgrades you have always wanted to accomplish and have your family enjoy the benefits of your labor.

Pure Indulgence...

(please click images to enlarge)

Soooo If I could have one really big indulgence in life it would have to be my very own bathing/dressing room and it would look just like the one above.

As we all know bathing is actually an art form and a moment in time that should never be rushed. Bathing and dressing for less than an hour is a sin. It's a time, whether you're a busy career woman or housewife for you to unwind and forget about the stresses of the day.

From the book Comfortable Country - Having a bath is a superbly comfortable way of slowing down. Bathing is not simply to do with getting clean; a shower can do that. The ritual of running the water, adding a swoosh of scented salts or a glug of luxurious oil, then sliding down for a long soak, makes having a bath a ceremony.

For true connoisseurs of bathing you must begin with a truly spectacular bath. Something so alluring you can't bare to be away from it. My favourite is this stunning stone bath or even a copper or claw foot.

The iron or glass table is a sweet addition for your scented candles, oils and perhaps a glass of wine :)

A simple chandelier is a must as well as some beautiful hooks or a dressing screen for a robe

I believe the picture above is the same room as the first, styled differently.

Again, this is the same room but you can see it's actually a whole bedroom. My bathing/dressing room would be seperate from my bedroom for complete privacy and no disruptions.

I do love the idea of the bathtub at a window. If bathing while the sun is still up, soaking while letting your thoughts drift outside is pure bliss.

The above pic is my father and step mothers guest bathroom in their home in the southern highlands. The relaxing view outside that window is absolutely stunning.

I imagine these beautiful etched doors would lead me from my bedroom to my bathing room with a white sheer curtain pulled across once inside.

I would have a big white fluffy rug to soften and pamper my feet with the luxurious texture.

I'm also thinking a fireplace of some sort is quite essential.

Once your bathing is done it's time for dressing. I would have a large antique armoire in the room filled with fluffy white towels. It also makes perfect storage for your candles, oils and salts supplies.

Finally, no bathing/dressing room would be complete without a stunning girly vanity. Mine would look similar to this with a skirt, tufted chair or stool, marble top, venetian mirror, sconces and an abundance of perfumes and lotions, powders and a little makeup.

*sigh*

thank you for allowing me to dream a while ;)

The small but gorgeous flat of Agathe Perroy

I tell you why I thought this wonderful little flat (42 m2) was worth mentioning...It's because when Interior Designer Agate Perroy saw it for the first time, it was in fact 2 small flats with one based on the ground floor and the other on the top floor of the small nineteenth century house.
Now, given that we are all avid readers of interior magazines, I suspect most of us can actually see the potential of a place even if it has small, dark rooms, wallpapers from the 70s, green tiled bathroom and people with two-heads living in it.
You know that you can just break down a few partition walls, paint the walls in white and change a few dark rooms into a welcoming, spacious space but Agate's mind saw well beyond this and worked out a way to link these two small flats together...so how did she achieve this gorgeous place?

First, to open up the space she knocked down a few partition walls, then removed the false ceiling to gain more height and discovered perfectly preserved oak beams (look how gorgeous they look!). With the agreement of the owners from the other flat on the ground floor, she took over the communal stairs and integrated them into her new space. The stairs now provide a visual separation for the two rooms (bedroom & kitchen/living) she created at the top of the flat.
In the bedroom (pictured above), the bath sourced from a scrap heap, is now facing her bed. On the right, between the windows, she uses vintage metal racks from a milk company to display her toiletries.

When it came to decorating her home, Agathe made good use of the treasures she's discovered in family attics (the quilts were found at a her grandmother's house), junk shops or on construction sites. In her bedroom, Agate stores seasonal clothes in boxes once used to ship bananas (you can find a similar fabric wardrobe at Habitat and Banana boxes in Brick Lane). Banana boxes wouldn't look great everywhere but because this room is spacious, airy and tidy, it works nicely and add a touch of colour and exotism.

In the dining area, the oak table also serves as the office, and is lit by an industrial suspension light. Agate hang bags of spices brought back from India on the wall and uses a galvanized metal hanging garden planter to display her favourite photos and objects. She also found the plastic dining chair in the street (one can still found cute things in the street).

In the the kitchen, Agathe had the work area made to measure from exotic wood — the oven is tucked away on the side and the hot plate is also used as a cutting board. A butcher's hook is used to suspend pots while on the wall are two vintage Jieldé lamps (brand new ones are available from Caravan in the UK). She just added a splash of colour with an African oiled rug on the concrete floor. So I don't know what you think but I love it...I think it's full of charm and full of light.
